The Knots and Nitty-Gritty: Deciding Between Cotton, Silk, and Wool for Your Necktie

While we are lucky to live in an age where options are nearly endless, we fall into the trap of being exposed to too much without knowing the basics, and therefore, how to make the right decision when updating your wardrobe. Today we will look at the fabrics used for neckties and bow ties in an attempt to bring more clarity to this question. Please note that we will only be looking at natural materials, not synthetic.

Cotton: Cotton is a lightweight and breathable fabric that is comfortable to wear, making it an ideal choice for neckties in warmer weather. It is also a durable and easy-to-care-for fabric that can (usually) be machine-washed and dried. Additionally, cotton ties are generally more affordable than silk or wool ties, making them a popular choice for everyday wear. In the cotton category also lies linen, a wonderfully light fabric great for warmer weather. Silk: Silk is a luxurious and high-quality fabric that has a smooth and soft texture, and a lovely sheen, making it a popular choice for formal occasions. It is also a strong and durable fabric that can withstand wear and tear, making it a good investment for long-term use. Maintenance is more finicky than cotton, however, as your only option is usually dry cleaning. Lastly, due to its prevalence in the industry, silk ties are available in an incredibly wide range of colors and patterns, making them a versatile choice for a variety of outfits. Wool: Wool is a warm and thick fabric that is ideal for colder weather, making it a good choice for winter or fall (or cooler spring days). It also has a natural resilience and elasticity, allowing it to retain its shape and resist wrinkles. Like silk, though, they will usually require dry cleaning as the way to maintain them. What makes wool unique is the texture of the fabric itself. It does not carry the same sheen as silk, but offers a different feel and presence than cotton, making it a stylish choice for those looking to stand out. Now, before signing off, I wanted to mention that at the end of the day, your personal style and what you like as an individual is what matters most. What I've mentioned in the article is a tried and true guideline, but we aren't limited to guidelines. You want to wear a certain wool tie to a summer event because of its impeccable design? Go for it. Want to wear a cotton tie you've had your eye on for a formal event? Have at it. Men's formalwear, above all else, is about balance and self-confidence. If you've found a knockout of a tie that takes your wardrobe (and your confidence) to the next level, the fabric won't matter. Play with color, texture and designs until you find a truly special combination.
